Vision: The owners of this Californian bungalow needed to replace the original ‘boxy’ layout with a functional, open floorplan fit for a family. They wanted zones for adults and children so that the design endures over time.

Approach: Heritage overlays restricted new construction to be hidden from street view. We therefore retained the original exterior then opted for a ‘step-down’ to build the rear. This gave us freedom to design the ideal contemporary haven.

Outcome: The floorplan is now flexible and flowing, and leads to a stunning outdoor space featuring a striking pergola.

It’s finding opportunity to combine period and modern styles, and to not be limited by what is happening at the front of the home. The old context doesn’t have to literally drive the new, but they can work in harmony.
