Built in the early 1900s as Windsor's Post and Telephone Exchange, this red brick building carries real civic history, its freestone detailing and leadlight windows still distinctive on the streetscape. Over time, the original fitout had faded into something generic. Our brief was to give it a fresh, modern identity, distinctive enough to match the character of the building itself.
Working with interior designers Leftfield Studio, we reshaped the apartment across four split levels, from a self contained studio at ground level, up through open plan living and dining, to bedrooms, a library loft and a new rooftop terrace.
With ceilings soaring to nearly five metres, the challenge was scale. We created "rooms in rooms," defined, intimate zones within the larger volume, and used layered, ambient lighting in place of downlights to bring warmth and proportion to the space. The new rooftop terrace was carefully concealed from the street to protect the heritage facade, while opening onto sweeping views of the CBD.
