We have exciting news to share from the HIA Housing Awards! Our custom-designed family home, the MacFarland St House in Brunswick, built by the talented team at GJC Carpentry & Construction, was Highly Commended in the Residential Renovations & Additions category!
The HIA Awards recognize the highest standards in quality workmanship, design innovation, and visual appeal. This project holds special meaning for us, as it was carefully crafted as a "forever home" for the builder and his family, with functionality and timeless style as top priorities.
Overcoming Initial Design Challenges
This project began with a significant hurdle: the property came with an existing planning permit, but the design simply wasn't right. It was overdeveloped for the site and the layout failed to connect with the family’s vision for a truly cohesive and liveable space.
Navigating the Heritage Landscape
The Brunswick location also meant successfully navigating specific Heritage Planning Overlays. These overlays require sensitive design to ensure new works respect and enhance the existing character of the streetscape. Working closely with GJC and the local council, we completely redesigned the plan, skilfully managing the permit amendment process while ensuring:
- Compliance: Meeting strict heritage and planning guidelines.
- Context: Designing additions that complement the home's original features.
- Liveability: Creating a layout that perfectly suits the family's modern needs.
